The Click of Understanding
That’s what I’m calling the sudden flash of insight when you first fully comprehend a difficult idea. It’s when you’re one insight away from really getting it, and then it just clicks. One minute, you’re looking at a black box, the next, an open book. In that same moment, all the magic disappears, in the best possible way. When you don’t know something, it’s indistinguishable from magic; you don’t know how it works, it just does. But after it clicks, the idea is what it is. The previously endless possibilities dwindle down to one: how it actually works. Before, you could only imagine all the different ways the black box might do what it does. Now, you can open the box and play with what’s inside.
